About This Trail

Sheep Lake Couloir drops roughly 1,000 vertical feet from the summit of Shepherd Peak to Sheep Lake, north-facing and sheltered enough to hold powder long after surrounding terrain has been stripped by wind. The couloir is one of the premier lines accessible from Crystal Mountain's Southback zone.

The approach traverses Crystal Mountain's Southback through Silver Basin and Crystal Lakes Basin, then climbs Crystal Peak via bootpacking on wind-packed snow. From the Crystal Peak col, a traverse across Shepherd Peak's west face reaches the summit. Cornices build along the top of the couloir; assess entry conditions carefully.

The couloir itself is narrow early in the season, widening as snow fills in the rocky features. The north aspect preserves snow quality remarkably well. On good days, powder persists top to bottom while south-facing slopes have already consolidated. Below the couloir, the route continues toward Sourdough Gap or east toward Placer Lake, where another 1,500 vertical feet of open north-facing slopes drop into Morse Creek Basin. The return exits via Dogleg Peak.

This is a full-day mission from Crystal Mountain, not a quick sidecount lap. The distance, multiple transitions, and committing couloir entry make it a spring touring objective despite the midwinter powder potential. Plan timing carefully; the return route is long and darkness comes fast in the short days of early season.

Safety & Considerations

Persistent Hazards

  • ATES Challenging: committing couloir entry with cornice hazard at the top
  • North-facing couloir holds snow well but can harbor wind slab
  • Bootpacking Crystal Peak on wind-packed snow requires ice axe
  • Long return route via Dogleg Peak; darkness is a real hazard in early season
  • Remote terrain beyond Crystal Mountain resort boundary; self-rescue required

Getting There

Google MapsApple Maps
Parking

Access via Crystal Mountain Resort. Park at the resort base area and use the Southback gates to access the backcountry. Resort lift ticket or uphill policy may apply.

Approach

From Crystal Mountain Southback, traverse through Silver Basin and Crystal Lakes Basin. Bootpack Crystal Peak on wind-packed snow. Traverse Shepherd Peak's west face to the summit. Assess cornice conditions at the couloir entry.

Timing

Early start required given the long approach and return. In midwinter, short daylight limits the window. Time the descent to avoid being caught in Morse Creek Basin after dark.
