Paradise to Crystal Mountain Traverse
Mount Rainier AreaBest Feb–Apr
A three-day ski traverse from Paradise to Crystal Mountain, crossing glaciers and couloirs on Rainier's east side.
About This Trail
The Paradise to Crystal Mountain traverse links Mount Rainier's south side to the resort on its northeast flank, covering 14,000 feet of total elevation change over three days. The route strings together glacier descents, alpine passes, and remote basins that few skiers ever see in winter.
From Paradise Visitor Center, the route climbs toward the Muir Snowfield and camps on Whitman Crest. Day two descends the Whitman Glacier, then crosses Fryingpan Glacier and climbs to Banshee Peak. The Gateway Couloir punches through the Sarvant Glacier cliff band, a committing section that demands stable snow and confident skiing. Beyond the couloir, the Cowlitz Chimneys offer 2,500 feet of open descent before the route traverses Governors Ridge toward Deadwood Lakes and Crystal Lakes.
The final day crosses Cayuse Pass, where Highway 410 lies buried under snow nine months of the year, then climbs to Crystal Mountain Resort's south side. The traverse ends at the Forest Queen chairlift, an unlikely finish for three days of wilderness skiing.
This is a serious winter undertaking. Three days of loaded packs through glacial terrain, remote basins, and rarely-skied couloirs require a stable weather window, deep snowpack, and complete self-sufficiency. The reward is a traverse across the full breadth of Rainier's eastern flanks, with descents that no summer trail can replicate.

Safety & Considerations
Persistent Hazards
- ATES Challenging: avalanche terrain throughout, including the Gateway Couloir
- Glacier travel on Whitman and Fryingpan glaciers; crevasse awareness required
- Gateway Couloir through Sarvant Glacier cliff band is committing and consequential
- Three days of loaded packs in remote terrain; self-rescue capability essential
- Highway 410 at Cayuse Pass is buried; no bailout options mid-traverse
- Winter camping at high altitude with extreme cold and wind exposure
Getting There
Car shuttle required. Start at Paradise Visitor Center (requires park entrance fee and winter access). Finish at Crystal Mountain Resort base area. Arrange pickup or plan to hitch from Crystal to retrieve vehicles.
Begin at Paradise and climb toward the Muir Snowfield. Camp on Whitman Crest for day one. The route trends northeast through Fryingpan Glacier, Banshee Peak, and the Gateway Couloir before reaching the Cowlitz Chimneys.
Multi-day objective requiring a stable 3-day weather window. Deep snowpack is essential for the couloir and glacier sections. February appears to be the optimal window when snowpack is consolidated but daylight is increasing.
