About This Trail

Dogleg Peak stands above Henskin Lake in Crystal Mountain's Southback zone, a compact summit with multiple fall lines dropping in every direction. The steep north face alone holds wide open bowls, tight tree lines, and a prominent couloir descending directly to the lake. Base camping at Henskin Lake puts the summit within 10 minutes, turning a single peak into a full day of laps.

The approach begins from Crystal Mountain near the Quicksilver chair, climbing roughly 1,000 feet to establish camp on the shores of Henskin Lake. The sheltered lake basin blocks wind and provides flat tent platforms in deep snow. From camp, the summit is a short skin, and the descent options fan out across multiple aspects: the main Dogleg Chute on the fall line, northwest tree skiing with consistent pitch, and south-facing open terrain through scattered trees.

This is a base camping mission, not a summit-and-go. The value is in lapping the peak repeatedly, stacking 2,000 or more vertical feet of descending per day without the commute. Late December conditions can deliver dry, unconsolidated powder across all aspects. The terrain is steep enough to be engaging but not technical enough to require ropes or ice tools.

Pack reliable sleeping gear. Cold nights at the lake are real, and a failed sleeping pad will end the trip early.

Safety & Considerations

Persistent Hazards

  • ATES Challenging: steep north face with multiple avalanche paths
  • Couloir to Henskin Lake is steep and consequential in unstable conditions
  • Cold overnight temperatures at the lake; gear failure can be serious
  • Crystal Mountain backcountry; self-rescue capability required

Getting There

Parking

Access via Crystal Mountain Resort. Park at the resort and use the Southback gates to reach the backcountry. Check Crystal's uphill travel policy.

Approach

From Crystal Mountain near the Quicksilver chair, skin roughly 1,000 feet to Henskin Lake. Establish camp on the sheltered lakeshore. The summit is a short skin from camp.

Timing

Overnight mission. Plan to arrive at camp with enough daylight for at least one summit lap. Cold-rated sleeping gear is essential for the overnight.
