About This Trail

Rainbow Canyon drops into a tree-filled gorge near the Mount Walker trailhead along Highway 101. The short trail switchbacks steeply downhill, then parallels Elbo Creek through lush Peninsula vegetation to reach views of a small waterfall and the Quilcene River. The total distance is about a mile round trip, making this a quick leg-stretcher rather than a full outing.

The trailhead takes some finding. Look for an abandoned campground driveway across from the Mount Walker parking area, slightly north on Highway 101. No signs mark the turnoff, and the old campground entrance gives no indication a trail starts here. Walk the campground loop counter-clockwise to find the marked trail entrance.

The gorge environment features heavy moss, lichen, and rhododendrons under a deciduous canopy that puts on strong fall color. WTA crews maintain the trail regularly. The waterfall view is partially obscured by tree branches. Wet-season visits, when Elbo Creek runs full, offer the most dramatic water features.

This is an excellent time of year for viewing waterfalls, especially with all the rain we've been having. This trailhead is difficult to find for two reasons: 1.
