A mellow old-growth loop near Hoodsport that works rain or shine, with an optional link to Mount Ellinor for more.
About This Trail
Big Creek makes a satisfying loop through old-growth forest in the shadow of Mount Ellinor near Hoodsport. The trail passes through towering bigleaf maples, crosses creeks on sturdy bridges, and follows a gentle grade that works well for families and newer hikers. Rest benches and lunch spots appear at regular intervals along the route.
The loop connects to the Mount Ellinor Trail for hikers looking to extend the day with a serious climb. On its own, Big Creek stays mellow, winding through cool shade along burbling creeks. The old-growth canopy keeps temperatures comfortable even on hot summer days, and the forest atmosphere holds up well in rain, making this a legitimate year-round destination.
A Northwest Forest Pass is required at the Big Creek Campground trailhead. The small parking lot fills quickly on sunny weekends, especially by late morning. Recent fire mitigation work has changed the look of some trail sections. Bathrooms at the campground may be locked during the off-season.

Getting There
Northwest Forest Pass required. The parking lot at Big Creek Campground is small and overflows by midday on sunny weekends. Pit toilet at the trailhead. Bathrooms may be locked in winter.
From Shelton, drive north on Highway 101 about 15 miles to Hoodsport. Turn left on Highway 119, go west 9.5 miles to a T-intersection with Forest Road 24. Turn left, then immediately right into Big Creek Campground. Follow through to the day-use parking area.
Arrive before 10 AM on sunny weekends to secure parking. On overcast or rainy days, the lot stays manageable all day. Early arrivals on weekdays have the trail mostly to themselves.
Recent Reports
Nice hike on a well maintained trail. The campground was still closed as of 3/27/26 so we parked on the side of the road.
Hiked from Big Creek Campground to the Upper Mt. Ellinor TH spur this morning.
I started hiking around 8:20 on a rainy Sunday morning and saw no one else on the trail. There were a few people in the lot getting ready to start their hike as I was leaving around 10am.
