Umtanum Ridge Crest
Central WashingtonBest Mar–May, Oct–Nov
A steep desert ridge climb to panoramic Cascade views above the Yakima River canyon.
About This Trail
The Vista Trail climbs hard from the Umtanum Creek valley floor to the exposed ridge above, gaining 732 meters through sagebrush steppe and loose volcanic rock. The route starts gently along the canyon bottom, passes a small aspen grove, then pitches upward through sandy switchbacks that demand solid footing. The final half-mile turns steep and relentless, with loose scree underfoot and no shade for cover.
The payoff at the ridge crest delivers panoramic views across the Yakima River canyon and east toward the high desert. On clear days, Mount Rainier, Mount Adams, and the Stuart Range line the horizon. Spring carpets the lower slopes with balsamroot and lupine while bighorn sheep graze the rocky outcrops. Fall brings golden foliage in the canyon below and cooler temperatures for the climb.
Ticks are prolific in spring, so long pants and regular checks are essential from March through June. Rattlesnakes sun themselves on the trail in warmer months. Wind at the ridge crest can be fierce any time of year. Carry more water than expected. This is a surprisingly physical hike for its distance.

Safety & Considerations

Persistent Hazards
- rattlesnakes
- ticks (spring)
- loose rock on steep sections
- extreme wind exposure at ridge crest
- no shade or water on trail
Getting There
Umtanum Creek Recreation Area parking lot. $5 cash per vehicle (BLM fee, year-round). America the Beautiful Pass also accepted. Two vault toilets at the lot. No running water. The lot fills on spring weekends.
From the parking area, cross the suspension bridge over the Yakima River and follow the canyon trail briefly before turning uphill on the Vista Trail. The route is straightforward but unsigned in places. Watch for the turnoff from the canyon floor trail.
Start early in warm months to avoid afternoon heat on the exposed climb. Spring and fall mornings offer the best conditions. Wind tends to build through the day at the ridge crest.
