About This Trail

Swan Creek Park covers a long forested canyon on Tacoma's eastern edge — three hundred and seventy-three acres of city land draining a salmon-bearing creek. Three named trails — Swan Creek, Canyon Rim, and the Lister connector — combine into loops totaling close to five miles. Surfaces shift between paved sections, soft-surface dirt, and tracks shared with mountain bikes through the steeper banks.

The forest is denser than any city park has a right to be. Mature Douglas fir, bigleaf maple, and red alder fill the canyon walls; sword fern and salmonberry crowd the floor. Coho and cutthroat use Swan Creek itself, and salmon return runs draw nature center groups in October and November. A community garden sits near the upper trailhead.

This is the rare urban park that genuinely feels like the woods. Two developed trailheads — one with an outhouse and picnic shelter — make access easy. No restrooms past the trailheads. Year-round, free, and useful as a stretch break or a midweek run.
