Jacobson Preserve
Central WashingtonBest Mar–Jun, Sep–Nov
Easy foothill walk through rare undisturbed shrub-steppe above the Wenatchee Valley.
About This Trail
Jacobson Preserve sits in the foothills right above Wenatchee, a pocket of undisturbed shrub-steppe managed by the Chelan-Douglas Land Trust. The trails here are gentle and meandering, climbing just 340 feet to a viewpoint overlooking the Wenatchee Valley. It is the kind of place you can visit on a lunch break or bring the whole family for an evening walk.
What makes this preserve worth knowing about is the ecology. Only about 3 percent of Washington's historic shrub-steppe remains undisturbed, and this is some of it. Rabbitbrush, sagebrush, arrowleaf balsamroot, and antelope bitterbrush make up the plant community, with three designated wildlife monitoring points along the route. Spring brings wildflowers that you can see from downtown Wenatchee when the hillsides turn gold and purple, drawing west-side visitors looking for early-season color.
The Saddlerock Traverse trail now connects Jacobson Preserve to the Saddle Rock summit, offering a more gradual approach than the traditional route from the southeast. Trails north of 5th Street close December 1 through April 1 for wildlife protection, but most trails south of 5th Street stay open year-round. Local schools bring first-graders here for field trips in spring, which tells you everything about the accessibility. You can also reach the trailhead by bus on Wenatchee Link route 5.

Getting There
Park at the Wenatchee Racket and Athletic Club lot off Skyline Drive. No fee. Alternatively, Wenatchee Link route 5 stops about 0.7 mile from the trailhead.
From Western Avenue in Wenatchee, follow Canyon Number 2 Road, then left onto Skyline Drive to the parking area. The Saddlerock Traverse trail connects from here to the Saddle Rock summit for a longer outing with more gain.
Any time of day works. Evening walks are popular with locals. In spring, mid-morning light is best for wildflower viewing.
Recent Reports
First visit to Saddle Rock and I decided to hike from the northwest end, rather than the original main trail to the southeast. I had heard the trail coming from the north (Jacobson Preserve) was more gradual, and that felt like my cup of tea today!
Like so many others from the west side of our state I was in the mood to see some wildflowers. I started at Sage Hills, which can be an overused hike that experiences parking issues.
The new trail to the Saddlerock summit starting from Jacobson Preserve is called the "Saddlerock Traverse trail" and offers a nice alternative to the traditional route. The trail is nicely graded with well placed switchbacks and never too steep at any point.
