Castle Rock
Central WashingtonBest Mar–Jun, Sep–Oct
Short, steep climb to a basalt summit above the Wenatchee Valley with wildflower meadows and volcano views in every direction.
About This Trail
Castle Rock rises as a prominent basalt formation on the edge of Wenatchee, visible from town and offering 360-degree views from its summit. The trail climbs steadily on packed dirt through open grasslands before the terrain turns rockier near the top. A loop trail circles the summit, with the clockwise (left) direction recommended to avoid a loose, exposed scramble section on the back side.
The Chelan-Douglas Land Trust and City of Wenatchee co-manage the property, keeping it well-maintained with clear signage and trail maps at the trailhead. The parking area includes ADA-accessible spots, a sheltered picnic plaza, and restrooms. No parking pass required.
Spring brings carpets of arrowleaf balsamroot, bluebells, and buttercups across the hillside. The summit delivers views of the Wenatchee Valley, the Columbia River, and the Cascade peaks. Summer gets hot on the exposed slope, so early morning or evening hikes work best. This makes a solid after-work option for Wenatchee residents or a quick leg-stretcher for travelers passing through on US-2.
