Cape Disappointment State Park - Coastal Forest Loop
Southwest WashingtonBest Year-round
Old-growth Sitka spruce loop with interpretive ecology signs, tucked behind Cape Disappointment's busier lighthouse trails.
About This Trail
This short forest loop winds through old-growth Sitka spruce on the inland side of Cape Disappointment State Park, away from the busier lighthouse trails. Massive spruce trunks tower over a narrow, rooty path through dense coastal understory. Interpretive signs along the route explain forest succession and plant ecology.
The trail starts across a grassy clearing before ducking into heavy forest canopy. Two fork options create a shorter half-mile loop or a longer 1.5-mile route. A spur trail leads to a viewpoint, though signage is minimal. Near the loop's end, a paved shell-embedded path connects to the Maya Lin Confluence Project installation, part of a series of artworks honoring the Lewis and Clark expedition.
This works best as a complement to the park's headliner trails at North Head and Cape Disappointment lighthouses rather than a standalone destination. The dense canopy provides shelter on rainy days, making it a solid option when coastal wind keeps you off exposed headlands. Mosquitoes and yellow jackets can be aggressive in late spring and summer. Check current conditions before visiting, as recent construction on the nearby boat launch has caused periodic closures.

Getting There
Small gravel lot accessed via Fort Canby Road. From Spur Road 100, pass the North Head Lighthouse turnoff, descend on Fort Canby Road, turn left at the four-way intersection, then immediately left into the lot. Discover Pass required for state park entry.
The trail starts from the gravel lot across a grassy clearing. At the first fork, going left takes the longer 1.5-mile loop. Watch for an unmarked spur trail to the viewpoint. The paved path near the end connects to the Maya Lin Confluence Project art installation.
This loop takes 30 minutes to an hour. Best combined with North Head Lighthouse or Cape Disappointment Lighthouse trails for a full day at the park.
