About This Trail
An 848-foot basalt core of an ancient volcano rises straight from the Columbia River, and a steep trail of catwalks, handrails, and switchbacks climbs every foot of it. The route clings to the rock face, cantilevering over open air in places, crossing over itself as it spirals upward. Lewis and Clark named this formation in 1805, and it went unscaled until 1901.
From the summit, the Columbia River stretches east toward Bonneville Dam and west toward the coast. On clear days, look north to Hamilton Mountain and south into the Oregon Gorge. The wind picks up on top, even on calm days below, so bring an extra layer.
This is one of the shortest hikes in the Gorge that delivers a real summit experience. The trail stays in good shape year-round, making it a solid pick when higher-elevation options are snowed in or washed out. Expect company on sunny weekends.

Getting There
Two lots on the south side of Highway 14 hold about 30 vehicles total. The eastern lot has flush restrooms and an ADA privy. Fills fast on sunny weekends. Discover Pass required.
The trail starts directly from the parking lot on Highway 14. Switchbacks and catwalks the entire way. No route-finding needed. The only stairs are near the summit.
Early morning or late afternoon to avoid weekend crowds. Weekday visits offer near-solitude. The hike takes most people 45 minutes to an hour round trip.

Very nicely maintained. the only stairs are at the top, but it has steepness throughout.
