Snow Bowl Hut Snowshoe
Mount Rainier AreaBest Dec–Apr
A steep winter climb to a beloved backcountry hut with Rainier views and community spirit.
About This Trail
Snow Bowl Hut, known as Bruni's, stands as the most popular destination in the Mount Tahoma Trails Association network. Named for Brunhilde Wislicenus, who funded its reconstruction after a 2007 fire destroyed the original structure, the hut draws a devoted community of winter recreationists. The route climbs steadily and steeply along forest roads from the Sno-Park, gaining 610 meters over about 7 km one way. This is real work on snowshoes or skis, especially with overnight gear.
From the lower Sno-Park, the trail passes two additional parking areas before crossing Catt Creek and hitting switchbacks. At a saddle around 4.2 km, a junction splits right toward High Hut while the Snow Bowl route continues left through forest with glimpses of Mount Rainier. Prayer flags mark the final steep push to the hut. The last 400 meters climb hard, but the hut and its surroundings reward the effort. Trip reports consistently describe the overnight experience as warm and social, with games, conversation, and deep snow all around.
The hut opens free during daylight (7 a.m. to 7 p.m.) and requires advance reservations through the MTTA website for overnight stays. Dogs are allowed on leash. The route shares a trailhead with High Hut and Yurt snowshoe routes, so combining destinations or exploring different huts on return visits keeps the area fresh.

Safety & Considerations
Today's Hazard
- Strong sun — sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses recommended
Persistent Hazards
- Steep road access in winter conditions
- Sustained steep climbing with avalanche potential on adjacent slopes
- Hypothermia risk in wet winter weather
- Route-finding in whiteout without GPS
Getting There
From Elbe, drive east on SR 706 toward Ashford about 8 miles. Turn onto DNR Road 1 near a Baptist church before reaching Ashford. Lower Sno-Park is 5 miles up the road; upper Sno-Park is 1 mile further when the gate is open. Sno-Park permit required November through April. Road can be snow-packed and steep; chains or AWD recommended.
The route follows forest roads with consistent uphill grade. Cross Catt Creek and navigate switchbacks to a saddle junction at roughly 4.2 km. Stay left for Snow Bowl (right goes to High Hut). The final 400 meters below the hut are the steepest section. Trail is generally well-tracked by regular visitors but carry a map of the MTTA system.
For day trips, start early to allow 3-4 hours up and 2 hours down with limited winter daylight. For overnights, plan to arrive well before dark. The descent goes fast on skis; snowshoers should budget more time going down than expected on steep packed trail.

Skied from the Upper 1 Rd Snopark to Snow Bowl Hut. Likely the last time for the winter season as the temps warm up.
Magical overnight adventure to the MTTA Yurt! Road was pretty good - clear to the Lower Parking Lot, and a small amount of snow to the Upper Parking Lot.
