Copper Creek Hut Snowshoe
Mount Rainier AreaBest Dec–Mar
A gentle snowshoe through groomed winter trails to a cozy backcountry hut with Rainier views.
About This Trail
Copper Creek Hut sits along the Mount Tahoma Trails Association network, a system of over 50 miles of groomed cross-country ski and snowshoe trails just west of Ashford. The route follows gently rolling former logging roads through second-growth forest, gaining elevation steadily but never steeply until the final approach to the hut. On clear days, Mount Rainier dominates the eastern skyline from several vantage points along the way, particularly at the Mountain View Junction where Cal's Trail intersects.
The hut operates as a free warming shelter during daylight hours (7 a.m. to 7 p.m.), making it an ideal turnaround point for day snowshoers. Overnight stays require advance reservations through the Mount Tahoma Trails Association website. The hut fills up on weekends and holidays, so plan ahead. Winter nights at the hut, surrounded by deep snow and quiet forest, rank among the best backcountry overnight experiences available to beginners in the PNW.
This trail closes mid-April through mid-November to protect sensitive wildlife habitat. Snowshoers share the route with cross-country skiers and should stay to the edges of groomed trails, yielding right of way to skiers. Road 92 to the trailhead can be dicey in winter; traction devices or chains are strongly recommended.

Safety & Considerations
Today's Hazard
- Strong sun — sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses recommended
Persistent Hazards
- Winter road conditions on Forest Road 92
- Limited daylight in winter months
- Route-finding in whiteout conditions without GPS or map
- Hypothermia risk if unprepared for weather changes
Getting There
Access via Forest Road 92 (278th Ave E), one mile west of Ashford. Sno-Park permit required November through April. Road 92 is plowed but often snow-packed; chains or traction devices recommended. Active logging trucks use this road on weekdays.
The route follows groomed trails through the MTTA network. From the trailhead, ascend moderately for about one mile to Cooper's Loop junction. Take the right fork toward the hut via either Rainier View Trail or Valley View Trail. The final approach climbs steeply for several hundred feet. Trail junctions are well-signed but carry a map of the MTTA trail system.
Start by mid-morning for a day trip to allow time at the hut and a relaxed return before dark. Winter daylight is limited; carry a headlamp. For overnight stays, arrive before 7 p.m. when the hut opens for reserved guests.
