About This Trail

This four-day expedition links Sahale's west face, Forbidden's NW face via the North Ridge, and Buckner's north face into a single committing North Cascades trip. The approach climbs Cascade River Road to a moraine camp around sixty-five hundred feet below the Quien Sabe Glacier, then works through the upper glacier system to set up each successive summit and descent.

The skiing combines aspects across the entire compass — Sahale's west face, Forbidden's complex NW face routes, and Buckner's wild north face. Each descent demands its own technical commitment. Boston Glacier crossing connects Forbidden to Buckner; rappel capability is required for Sharkfin Col passage. Snow conditions move from boot-top powder on the cold cycle to corn on solar aspects later in the trip.

This is among the most committing ski mountaineering objectives in Washington. Multi-day weather window, rope team and rescue gear, and the experience to manage three different no-fall ski descents in remote glaciated terrain are mandatory. Late March through mid-April delivers the standard window. National Park Pass at the trailhead; wilderness permit required for camps inside North Cascades NP.

Ski Terrain

Three summits, three aspects: west-facing on Sahale, NW on Forbidden, north on Buckner. Ranges from boot-top powder to spring corn depending on aspect and timing.

Skin Track

No established skin track. Multi-day trail-breaking through the Quien Sabe and Boston Glacier system. Bootpack and rope-team work on the steepest sections.
