Suiattle Traverse
North CascadesBest Apr–May
A four-day ski traverse through the wildest terrain in the North Cascades, with Glacier Peak as a constant companion.
About This Trail
The Suiattle Traverse covers roughly 30 miles over four days through the heart of Glacier Peak Wilderness, linking Holden Village to the White Chuck drainage. This is Part 3 of Kyle Miller's American Alps Traverse, a continuous ski linkup from Mount Rainier to Mount Baker. The route climbs over Chiwawa Mountain's northern headwall, traverses the exposed ridge of Fortress Mountain, drops nearly 4,000 feet into the Napeequa Valley, and finishes with a technical traverse around Tenpeak Mountain before descending to the road.
Fortress Mountain stands out as the crux: a narrow ridge with cornices and significant drops on both sides demands confident alpine travel. Below the ridges, spring snow transitions from firm morning surfaces to heavy slush by afternoon, and lower valley sections involve creek crossings and brushy terrain. Route-finding matters here more than raw fitness, though both get tested daily.
Glacier Peak dominates the western skyline for much of the traverse, punching through cloud layers while the eastern valleys stay clear. The scale of the terrain is hard to overstate. Standing on any of the high points along this route, the North Cascades stretch out in every direction with very few signs of human presence. This is one of the most committing multi-day ski tours in Washington, and the rewards match the effort.

Safety & Considerations
Persistent Hazards
- Corniced ridges with significant exposure on Fortress Mountain
- Avalanche terrain on steep headwalls and valley sides
- Creek crossings with weakening snow bridges in late spring
- Very remote with no bailout options for extended sections
- Wet snow instability during afternoon warming cycles
Getting There
Starts at Holden Village, accessed via Lady of the Lake ferry from Chelan or by skiing in from another section of the American Alps Traverse. Exit via White Chuck Road, which requires a vehicle shuttle or prearranged pickup.
From Holden Village, skin to Lyman Lake as a base camp on day one. The traverse then moves west over Chiwawa Mountain, Fortress Mountain, through Buck Creek Pass area, over High Pass into the Napeequa Valley, around Tenpeak Mountain, and out to White Chuck Road. Requires pre-positioned food caches or carries for four days of supplies.
Early morning starts are critical for firm snow on the steep headwalls and exposed ridges. Plan to be on corniced terrain before solar warming. A stable weather window of at least four days is required; watch for sun dogs or other frontal indicators that signal incoming storms.
