Chiwaukum Mountain
North CascadesBest Mar–May
A big spring ski loop through the Chiwaukum Range with a knife-edge ridge, corn turns, and Glacier Peak views.
About This Trail
Chiwaukum Mountain tops out at 6,680 feet on a 14.5-mile counterclockwise loop with 5,400 feet of total gain. The route ascends through logged terrain on summer trail, breaks into open slopes, then traverses a ridge connecting North and Middle Chiwaukum before descending via groomed logging roads. The ridge traverse between the two peaks narrows to a knife-edge section above Loch Eileen, hundreds of feet below, making it the mental crux of the tour.
Spring conditions define this route. South-facing slopes catch early-season corn, and the open logged terrain on the ascent provides mellow skinning grades that ease the cumulative vertical. The plateau near the summit can develop styrofoam-textured snow that makes skiing unpredictable, while lower elevations on the descent mix exposed rocks and dirt with icy patches. Skin wax becomes essential as sticky spring snow builds up on the approach.
The Chiwaukum Range stretches north toward Glacier Peak with views of the broader Central Cascades. Larch forests along the route turn gold in autumn, and the same slopes that hold spring corn offer dramatic backdrops during larch season. Road access reaches close to the trailhead with easy car-to-skin transition, though downed trees may push the parking spot slightly lower. This tour rewards fit skiers who can handle a long day with variable snow, committed ridge traversal, and the navigation judgment to pick the right line off the summit.

Safety & Considerations
Persistent Hazards
- Knife-edge ridge traverse with significant exposure above Loch Eileen
- Variable spring snow from sticky gloop to ice
- Exposed rocks and dirt on lower descent
- Cornice potential along ridge crest
- Remote terrain on a long loop with limited bailout options
Getting There
Road access reaches near the trailhead. Fallen trees may block the last section, requiring parking slightly below the marked trailhead. Easy car-to-skin transition when road is clear.
Counterclockwise loop recommended. Ascend via summer trail through logged terrain, transitioning to open slopes before the ridge. Ridge traverse between North and Middle Chiwaukum includes a knife-edge section above Loch Eileen requiring careful navigation. Descent via groomed logging roads and forested switchbacks.
Early start critical for spring corn cycle. Target frozen conditions on the ascent and softening snow on south-facing descents by late morning. Allow a full day for the 14.5-mile loop.
