Roosevelt Grove of Ancient Cedars
Eastern WashingtonBest Jun–Oct
Ancient cedars up to 3,000 years old in a remote grove near the Idaho border, with a waterfall loop.
About This Trail
Tucked into a remote corner of the Colville National Forest near the Idaho border, this 22-acre grove holds western red cedars estimated to be 2,000 to 3,000 years old. A 1926 fire destroyed roughly three-quarters of the original forest, which makes the surviving trees all the more remarkable. Some of these cedars were already ancient when Rome was still a republic.
The main loop trail covers about 2.5 miles and visits both Granite Falls and the Upper Grove, where an overlook platform gives you an elevated view of the waterfall. A separate 0.3-mile lower grove loop starts from the north parking area and is easy to miss if you do not know to look for it. Both loops are gentle and well-suited for families or anyone wanting a quiet walk among old growth.
Getting here takes some commitment. The western approach from Metaline Falls on FR 22 crosses Pass Creek Pass and can be rough, so high clearance helps. The eastern route through Idaho on Highway 57 and Nordman Road works for any vehicle and is the better bet for sedans. Call the ranger district before heading out, especially early in the season, to check road conditions. Toilet facilities at the Stagger Inn Day Use Area trailhead.
