About This Trail

South Hill Bluff sits right inside Spokane's city limits but manages to feel like somewhere else entirely. The trail network covers roughly 25 miles of interconnected paths running along high bluffs above Hangman Creek and the railroad tracks below. You can piece together loops of almost any distance, from a quick mile to a full-day wander.

The standout season is spring. Arrowleaf balsamroot blooms across the hillsides in late April and May, turning the bluffs gold. The rest of the year, these trails serve as reliable after-work options with gentle grades, dog-friendly policies, and multiple access points scattered across Spokane's south side. Entry points near Polly Judd Park, Bernard Street, and 57th Avenue give you options depending on where you are starting from.

Expect some mud and snow patches through winter and early spring. The bluff-top sections stay drier than the lower creek-level trails. This is an urban trail system, so you will encounter other users, but the sheer extent of the network means it never feels crowded. No pass or fee required at any access point.

Getting There

Google MapsApple Maps
Parking

Multiple free access points. Primary parking near Polly Judd Park off 29th Avenue (drive west from Monroe Street, three blocks to road's end, right on High Drive, then left into lot). Additional parking at Bernard Street and 57th Avenue entrances.

Approach

The network has many entry points across Spokane's south hill. The 29th Avenue entrance near Polly Judd Park is the most commonly used. Pick your starting point based on which part of the network you want to explore. Trails are not always well-signed at junctions, so a downloaded map or GPS track helps.

Timing

Any time of day works. These trails are close to town and well-suited to after-work outings. Spring mornings offer the best wildflower light.

Trail was in good condition, other than a few downed trees blocking the trail about 3/4 mile in

This is a great urban trail, right in town but you feel like you're in the country. There's a ton of trails, I did an 8 mile loop and there were still lots of trails I didn't get to.
