About This Trail

Mica Peak is the go-to summit workout for Spokane Valley locals, rising to 4,800 feet through a network of trails that transition from fragrant ponderosa pine forest to sub-alpine brush and scattered aspen groves. The route from the Belmont parking lot runs about 10 miles round trip with 2,000 feet of gain, making it a solid half-day outing that delivers genuine mountain terrain without a long drive from town.

The most popular loop combines the Moonshine Flats, California Creek, and Rolling Stone trails, though the California Creek Trail has intermittent closures through the DNR-owned section. Check current conditions before planning a route through that segment. The western slope provides the full elevation experience even though the actual summit is off-limits, as the FAA owns the peak and its communications infrastructure.

Fall brings the best show here: aspen and birch groves turn gold against the dark ponderosa, and the views south across the rolling Palouse are particularly good in crisp autumn light. Winter visitors bring snowshoes for the upper reaches, and the trail sees year-round use from a dedicated local community. The parking lot accommodates horse trailers, so expect equestrian traffic on the lower trails.

Parking

Belmont Road parking lot accommodates both passenger vehicles and horse trailers. No pass required. From I-90 take Exit 289 (Pines Road/Highway 27), head south 8.5 miles, turn left on Belmont Road, continue 4.1 miles to the lot.

Approach

Multiple loop options from the Belmont trailhead. The standard route combines Moonshine Flats, California Creek, and Rolling Stone trails. Check current closure status on the California Creek section before heading out. The trail network is well-signed but complex enough to warrant a downloaded map.

Timing

No special timing needed for a half-day outing. Summer afternoons can be warm on exposed upper sections. Winter trips benefit from an early start to make the most of short daylight.
