Lake Padden Park
Puget Sound and IslandsBest Year-round
Bellingham's favorite lake loop, where the trail is smooth enough for strollers and the forest is deep enough to forget you're in town.
About This Trail
Lake Padden sits in a wooded basin on the south side of Bellingham, ringed by a 2.6-mile gravel path that draws joggers, dog walkers, and families year-round. The main loop is flat, wide, and well-maintained, hugging the shoreline through stands of Douglas fir and moss-draped bigleaf maples. Waterfowl crowd the water on most visits: mallards, coots, buffleheads, and cormorants are regulars.
If the lakeside circuit feels too short, the southeast corner of the park holds another 5 miles of woodland trails that climb gently through deeper forest. The upper trail on the south side adds a ridge detour through old-growth conifers with sword ferns blanketing the forest floor. These side trails see far fewer people than the main loop and offer a quieter experience.
The park has multiple parking areas off Samish Way, restrooms (though seasonal availability is hit or miss), and no pass required. Between the playground, boat docks, tennis courts, and golf course, there is plenty to do beyond the trail itself. This is one of those parks where you can bring the whole family and keep everyone happy for a full morning.

Getting There
Multiple small lots along the north and east sides off Samish Way. The west entrance lot tends to have space even on busy weekends. No pass or fee required.
The main loop is well-signed and obvious from any parking area. For the woodland trails in the southeast corner, look for spur paths departing the main loop near the south end of the lake.
No timing pressure here. Popular with after-work crowds on summer evenings.
