Rhododendron Park
Puget Sound and IslandsBest Apr–Sep
Flat forest ramble through thousands of Pacific rhododendrons on central Whidbey Island, best when the blooms peak in late May.
About This Trail
Rhododendron Park is a 32-acre Island County preserve tucked into central Whidbey Island just south of Coupeville. The main attraction is exactly what the name promises: thousands of Pacific rhododendrons, Washington's state flower, growing in dense stands under a canopy of Douglas fir. When they bloom in late May and early June, the forest floor turns pink and the whole place feels like a botanical garden that nobody planned.
The trail system is simple. Rhodie Road runs north-south through the middle on a gated section of old road, wide and flat and easy walking. Dirt loop trails branch off on both sides through the rhododendron groves. You can cover the whole network in an hour or two at a relaxed pace. The park also has picnic areas, a playground, basic campsites, and three baseball fields, so it doubles as a community park.
One thing to know: the park closes from October 1 through March 31 each year. And the nearby Naval Air Station's outlying landing field means you may hear jet noise on training days. Most visitors find it intermittent and not a dealbreaker, but it is worth knowing about.

Getting There
Free parking at the main lot off W Patmore Road (south end) or a secondary lot on the park's north end. Parking is plentiful and has never been reported as full.
From the Clinton ferry terminal, drive north on Highway 20 about 24 miles. Turn west onto W Patmore Road just north of the Navy field. The parking lot is half a mile in on the right.
Any time of day works. For rhododendron blooms, aim for the last two weeks of May through early June. Park is closed October through March.
Recent Reports
Rhodie Road is a gated off section of an old road, still used by the park folk, so no issues there. The others are well established trails and in typical off-season (camp area closed) condition.
Walked the Rhododendron Park trails Wednesday from the main southern lot off Patmore Rd. Parking is free and plentiful.
We walked on Rhodie road with the dogs, it was shady and cool on a hot day. No other walkers, just 2 bicyclists so felt like we had the path to ourselves.
