Fragrance Lake
Puget Sound and IslandsBest Year-round
A steep forest climb to a quiet mountain lake with Samish Bay views, right off Chuckanut Drive near Bellingham.
About This Trail
The trail wastes no time gaining elevation, switchbacking up through old-growth forest from the Chuckanut Drive trailhead. About a mile in, a spur trail breaks off to an overlook with views across Samish Bay to the San Juan Islands. This viewpoint alone makes the climb worthwhile on a clear day.
Past the viewpoint, the trail dips briefly before steepening again on the final push to the lake. A 0.6-mile loop circles the shoreline, passing huge boulders on the west side and quieter picnic spots along the water. The lake holds warmth well enough for swimming by midsummer. Kissing gates at both ends of the trail keep dogs contained, as leashes are required throughout.
The wide, well-maintained trail sheds rain effectively, with only one perpetually muddy section that hikers quickly learn to expect. Larrabee State Park sits directly across Chuckanut Drive, adding beach access, lawns, and flush toilets to the outing. The proximity to Bellingham makes this a go-to workout hike for locals, so expect company on weekends.

Getting There
Small lot to the left of the ranger station at the trailhead on Chuckanut Drive, plus about a dozen spots on the east side of the road. Discover Pass required. Flush toilets and water available at Larrabee State Park across the road. Dogs allowed on leash; kissing gates at trail ends enforce the policy.
From Mount Vernon, take I-5 north to Exit 231, navigate roundabouts to SR 11/Chuckanut Drive northbound, and turn left at the Larrabee State Park entrance after about 15 miles. The trailhead is directly across from the park. From Bellingham, head south on SR 11 for 7 miles. The trail climbs steadily via switchbacks; the lake loop adds 0.6 miles at the top.
Weekday mornings or early weekend starts secure parking and a quieter lake experience. The hike takes most people 1.5 to 2.5 hours round trip. Combine with a stop at Larrabee State Park beach afterward.
