Deception Pass State Park - Headlands / Rosario Head / Lighthouse Point
Puget Sound and IslandsBest Year-round
Coastal headlands with old-growth forest, tide pools, and front-row views of the Deception Pass bridge spanning churning narrows.
About This Trail
Starting from Bowman Bay, this route links three distinct coastal destinations. Rosario Head juts into the open water with sheer cliff-edge views and a carved story pole depicting the Maiden of Deception Pass from Coast Salish tradition. Tide pools at Urchin Rocks reward low-tide visitors with sea stars and anemones. The headland drops off steeply, so keep children and dogs well back from the edges.
The Lighthouse Point loop heads in the opposite direction from Bowman Bay, climbing through old-growth Douglas fir and Pacific madrone with their distinctive peeling red bark. The trail crosses a forested peninsula to reach views of Deception Pass bridge from below, with tidal currents visible ripping through the narrows. Harbor seals haul out on rocks offshore. The loop returns through the forest with views of Lottie Bay.
Hikers looking for more distance can extend to Pass Lake or scramble up Goose Rock for the highest vantage point in the park. The trails here see heavy use on sunny weekends but stay manageable on weekdays and in winter. Dogs on leash are welcome throughout the park.
