Crowell Ridge
Eastern WashingtonBest Jul–Sep
A Selkirk ridgeline visible from the valley but walked by almost nobody, with a former fire lookout perch and deep wilderness in every direction.
About This Trail
Crowell Ridge runs along the spine of the Selkirk Mountains near Sullivan Lake, connecting old-growth forest to open alpine meadows and a former fire lookout site. You can see this ridge from the valley roads below, but most people never set foot on it. That solitude is the point.
The Sullivan Mountain trailhead puts you at 1,900 meters to start, so the 823 meters of gain is spread across the ridge traverse rather than concentrated in one brutal climb. The trail rolls through old-growth stands, wildflower meadows, and open ridgeline with views in every direction. WTA volunteer crews have maintained this trail consistently since 2022, keeping it clear of blowdown. The former lookout site at the high point delivers the kind of panorama that makes the Selkirks feel endless.
Access is the main obstacle. The drive from Metaline Falls involves Forest Road 245, which calls for high-clearance vehicles. Cell service drops off well before you reach the trailhead, so download maps and save directions before leaving town. An alternative route from Bear Pasture trailhead (available mid-May through mid-August) stretches the trip to a proper multi-day backpack. Weather can change fast on the exposed ridge, so pack layers regardless of the forecast.

Getting There
Small trailhead area at Sullivan Mountain. No fee required. No facilities. Save directions before leaving cell service.
From Metaline Falls, drive north 2 miles on Highway 31, right on Sullivan Lake Road for 4.3 miles, left on Highline Road (FR 2212) for 3 miles, then left on Forest Road 245 to Sullivan Mountain trailhead. High-clearance vehicle recommended. Alternative access from Bear Pasture trailhead (7.8 miles one-way, open May 15 to Aug 15).
Start early to allow time for the ridge traverse and the slow drive out. The ridgeline is fully exposed, so avoid afternoon thunderstorms by getting the high points done before midday.
