Shuksan Price NE Chute and BYS Couloir
Mt. Baker AreaBest Mar–May
A hidden Mt. Shuksan ski variant — the Price NE Chute and BYS Couloir on the wild north face.
About This Trail
This route combines two hidden Shuksan ski variants — the Price NE Chute and the "Below Yellow Shirt" (BYS) Couloir — both on the mountain's north face. Approach via the standard White Salmon route, but the descent line is distinct from the broader Price Glacier classic: the NE Chute drops nearly a thousand feet of forty-five-degree fall-line skiing that's striking from Nooksack Cirque but hidden from the White Salmon side.
The chute itself delivers planar smooth snow on the right cycle. The BYS couloir below combines firm windboard with cliff exposure overhead. Massive cornices guard the entrance below the North Summit — entrance route choice is critical and demands current observation. Rock fall has been documented during descents in this terrain.
This is one of the more committing Shuksan ski variants. April spring corn windows are the standard. Crevasse rescue gear, rope team work, and current avalanche advisory readings are all required. Distinct from the standard Price Glacier line — both are committing, but this one is more hidden and seldom skied.
Hidden NE Chute (~1,000 ft of 45-degree fall-line) plus the BYS couloir below with firm windboard and cliff exposure. Distinct from the standard Price Glacier line.
Same approach as the Price Glacier route. Bootpack on the steepest sections of the chute and ridge entrance.
