About This Trail

The Roosevelt Glacier descent is one of the rarely-skied lines on Mt. Baker, dropping the north-facing glacier between the North Ridge and Coleman routes. Standard execution approaches via Heliotrope Ridge from the Grouse Creek trailhead, climbs the North Ridge, and drops into the Roosevelt via a sneak entrance from Cockscomb Ridge. The exit threads west-facing gullies below the glacier's icefall.

The skiing combines twelve hundred feet of glacier descent with steep gully exits where conditions can run from corn to scratchy ice. The icefall and serac complex demands careful route-finding through the upper traverse. Exit gullies have been reported as icy chokepoints requiring axe work and downbooting rather than skiing.

This is committing terrain with limited public beta — sparse historical trip reports and infrequent ascents make this a route for parties willing to manage real route-finding judgment. April delivers the standard window with stable late-spring snowpack. Northwest Forest Pass at the trailhead.
