About This Trail

Windy Pass sits at the far end of the Eightmile Lake corridor, well past the crowds that flock to the lower lake. The route starts on the popular Eightmile Lake trail, climbs through a recovering burn zone with increasingly open views, then drops to Lake Caroline before continuing through subalpine meadows to the pass at 7,200 feet. Most people turn around at Eightmile or Caroline, so the trail beyond gets progressively quieter.

Lake Caroline makes a natural rest stop or overnight camp, with several sites and a privy. From there, gentle switchbacks through wildflower meadows lead to the pass itself. A side trip to a saddle above Caroline opens up sweeping panoramas of the Alpine Lakes Wilderness that justify the extra effort. The section between Little Eightmile and Caroline is notoriously brushy, sometimes shoulder-high, and can feel like bushwhacking even though you are on trail.

Beyond Windy Pass to the west, the trail deteriorates into a much less traveled, brushier route dropping steeply on gravelly switchbacks toward Trout Creek. This is remote backcountry in every sense. Overnight permits are required May 15 through October 31 for the stretch between Eightmile and Windy Pass, so plan ahead.

Getting There

Google MapsApple Maps
Parking

Park only on the right side of FR 7601 between the Eightmile Lake and Stuart/Colchuck Lake trailheads. Toilet available at the trailhead. Weekend parking fills before 7 AM in summer. Dispersed camping is prohibited between FR 7601 and Icicle Creek.

Approach

Follow Eightmile Lake trail 2.8 miles to the junction, then take the switchbacks up through the burn area. Views of Eightmile Lake and surrounding peaks open up as you climb. Descend to Lake Caroline, then continue past Little Caroline Lake on gentle meadow switchbacks to Windy Pass. A reliable stream crosses the trail about halfway between Caroline and the pass.

Timing

Early starts are essential on summer weekends for parking. For a day hike to Windy Pass, budget 8-10 hours for the full 15 miles and 4,300 feet of gain. Most hikers do this as an overnight with a camp at Lake Caroline.

We decided to climb Cashmere Mountain as a 2-day trip, camping overnight at Lake Caroline. I snagged overnight permits early via the Enchantments lottery.

We had a very lovely and uncrowded multi-day trip out to Windy Pass. The first leg of the hike to Little Eightmile still has lots of ripe thimbleberries.
