About This Trail

The Greg Ball Trail offers a quieter, longer approach to Wallace Lake compared to the main falls trail. Named for the WTA volunteer who launched the organization's trail maintenance program in 1993, the route follows the Old Railroad Grade for 2.2 miles before branching onto the Greg Ball Trail proper, which climbs gently alongside the North Fork of the Wallace River through maturing second-growth forest.

The maintained trail ends at a DNR road, where a short road walk leads to Wallace Lake's southern shore. Continuing half a mile north reaches Pebble Beach, a gravelly outwash with views across the water toward Mount Index. Designated campsites at the lake require advance permits from the park office.

This is a solid year-round option. The lower elevation keeps snow off the trail through most of winter, though mud is persistent in the rainy months. The falls roar impressively after heavy rain. The trail can be combined with the Wallace Falls viewpoint trail for a 9-10 mile loop, which is the best way to experience the full park in a single day.
