About This Trail

The Jack Trout Trailhead opens up a long valley walk through some of the best east-side Cascade forest you will find anywhere. Ponderosa pine and Douglas fir give way to western redcedar as the trail works its way deeper into the drainage. The grade is well-built and forgiving for most of the route, with moderate switchbacks that gain elevation steadily without punishment.

Trout Lake itself sits in a marshy basin with views back toward the Enchantment Range. The lake is shallow and can be more marsh than lake by late summer, so manage expectations on waterfront camping. The real draw is the forest and the journey. A loop option exists via Jack Ridge, and the trail connects to Jack Creek for extended backpacking into the broader Icicle Creek wilderness network.

Dogs are welcome on leash. Blowdowns are a recurring issue, especially on the Trout Creek side, though volunteer crews from WTA and the Back Country Horsemen keep the main corridor passable. Wildflowers show well in the meadow sections: paintbrush, lupine, bistort. Fall color is worth the trip on its own.

A beautiful hike! Pretty difficult incline up to Copper Lake with some big trees across the trail but very passable.

I spent three days with the Back Country Horsemen of Washington clearing the Trout lake trail and Jack Creek trail to Meadow Creek turn off.   The Trout lake trail is clear to the junction to jack ridge trail.
