Troublesome Mountain
Central CascadesBest Jul–Sep
An obscure scramble near Skykomish with almost no trail information and a history of access problems, best suited for experienced off-trail navigators.
About This Trail
Troublesome Mountain earns its name. This 5,433-foot peak sits on a ridge above the North Fork Skykomish drainage, and reaching it requires route-finding skills and comfort with off-trail travel. The WTA listing is sparse on details because there is barely a maintained path. Most documented approaches involve the Index-Galena Road, though one trip report mentions connecting from the Blanca Lake trailhead area along the same ridge system.
Access has been unreliable for years. Road 63 was closed indefinitely at some point, and the 2022 Bolt Creek Fire made the area completely inaccessible for a period. Trip reports are rare, with only two on file, and the most recent (2022) simply notes the fire closure. The 2016 report describes settling for just this one summit after discovering road closures, suggesting that even reaching the start requires current intel on road conditions.
This is not a hike you show up to on a whim. Check road status with the Skykomish Ranger District before committing to the drive. If you can get there, you will almost certainly have the mountain to yourself.

Access is via Index-Galena Road. Exact route details are poorly documented. Road 63 has been closed indefinitely in the past. Check with the Skykomish Ranger District for current road status before attempting.
Allow extra time for route-finding. This is not a trail you want to be navigating in fading light.
