Troublesome Creek Nature
Central CascadesBest May–Oct
A pocket-sized old-growth loop along a turquoise creek with footbridges, waterfalls, and interpretive signs tucked away off the Index-Galena Road.
About This Trail
Troublesome Creek Nature Trail is a short interpretive loop through old-growth forest at the Troublesome Creek Campground, about 10 miles up the Index-Galena Road from Highway 2. The creek runs a striking glacial blue-green through scoured rock channels, and the trail crosses it on sturdy footbridges with good views of small cascades. Tall cedar and fir tower overhead, and the forest floor is thick with moss.
The loop splits into an upper and lower section partway through. The lower path stays creek-side and is more scenic. The upper route climbs briefly through the forest canopy. Both are short and rejoin quickly. Interpretive signs along the way cover the old-growth ecosystem. The whole thing takes 20 to 30 minutes at a relaxed pace, making it a good leg-stretcher for anyone heading deeper up the valley.
The big question mark right now is road access. The Index-Galena Road has a history of washouts, and recent reports from late 2025 describe significant damage near Troublesome Creek. Check current road conditions with the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest before making the trip. When the road is open, the campground has ample parking, pit toilets, and picnic facilities. Northwest Forest Pass required.
