About This Trail

Tonga Ridge delivers big mountain views for modest effort. The trail meanders along an open ridgeline through regenerating forest and wildflower meadows, gaining elevation gradually before a steeper push to Mount Sawyer's summit. On clear days the 360-degree panorama takes in Glacier Peak, Mount Baker, Mount Rainier, and the craggy summits of the Alpine Lakes.

The route stays mostly in open forest with patches of heather and lupine. Peak wildflower bloom fills the meadows with color in mid-summer. In fall, the same meadows turn to berry patches that attract bears and hikers alike. Hunting season overlaps with berry season here, so wear bright colors and make noise.

The final push to Mount Sawyer follows a narrow, sometimes faint trail through dense heather. Route-finding skills help on this section. No water sources exist along the ridge after snowmelt, so carry everything needed. The trailhead sits at the end of a long forest road, and the small parking area fills on popular weekends. No pass required.

Getting There

Google MapsApple Maps
Parking

Small lot with 10-12 spaces. Privy at trailhead. No pass or fee required. Dogs allowed on leash.

Approach

From Highway 2, turn south on Foss River Road (FS 68). Cross the railroad trestle at 2.4 miles, continue 1 mile to a Y-intersection, turn left on FS 6830. Follow for 6.7 miles, then turn right on FS 310 (unmarked) for 1.3 miles to the trailhead. The access road is long and can be rough. Dogs allowed on leash.

Timing

No water on trail after snowmelt, so carry enough for the full hike. Start early enough to enjoy summit views before afternoon clouds build. The long drive on forest roads adds 30-45 minutes each way from Highway 2.

There is also a small washout about a mile before the turnoff to (FS-310). There was a patch of snow there so we decided to play it safe and park there.

Found ourselves with a rare sunny day in a stretch of rain, so headed out to squeeze in a late season hike. We went probably 3.

It was a beautiful fall day and several groups were taking advantage of the trail before the snow really hits. The trail is mostly snow free until you reach the summit where you get a great view of Glacier Peak.
