A quarter-mile walk to a historic fire lookout at 5,794 feet with panoramic Entiat Mountain views.
About This Trail
Sugarloaf is a drive-up fire lookout perched at 5,794 feet in the Entiat Mountains, requiring only a quarter-mile walk from the gate to the summit. The lookout was relocated here in 1949 from Lion's Rock near Ellensburg and offers panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. On clear days, the vistas extend across the entire Entiat range.
The real work happens on the drive up. Forest roads climb through ponderosa forest with the last mile or two featuring deep ruts and rocky sections. Most vehicles with moderate clearance can make it, but the final stretch to the lookout demands patience and slow driving. Once parked, the walk itself is flat to gently rolling.
This is a good stop to pair with other lookout visits in the area like Tyee or Steliko, both of which offer overnight rentals. Spring visitors will find birdsong and early wildflowers along the road; summer brings clear skies and far-reaching views.
