About This Trail

The Spider Gap - Buck Creek Pass Loop is a 34-mile backcountry circuit through the heart of the Glacier Peak Wilderness, linking some of the finest alpine terrain in the Central Cascades. The route connects Phelps Creek Trail, Spider Meadow, Spider Glacier, Lyman Lakes, Cloudy Pass, the Pacific Crest Trail, and Buck Creek Pass before returning via the Trinity Trailhead. Total elevation gain runs around 7,650 feet with a high point of 7,100 feet at Spider Gap.

Spider Meadow draws weekend backpackers with its wildflower displays and views of the surrounding peaks. The crossing of Spider Glacier requires solid route-finding and can involve steep snow travel well into August. Upper and Lower Lyman Lakes sit in a glacially carved basin with established campsites. From Cloudy Pass, you join the PCT briefly before heading south over Image Lake (a worthwhile 7-mile detour) and down to Buck Creek Pass, where wildflower meadows spread across a broad saddle with Glacier Peak looming above.

Most parties take 3 to 5 days. The counterclockwise direction (Phelps Creek to Spider Gap) puts the glacier crossing early in the trip. A car shuttle between Phelps Creek and Trinity trailheads (or a road walk) is required unless you have two vehicles. The Chiwawa River Road provides access; fire closures affected this area in 2025. Northwest Forest Pass required. Late July through September is the primary window, though snow conditions on Spider Glacier dictate the exact opening each year.

The 2025 Pomas Fire closed Chiwawa River Road during summer 2025. Snow on Spider Glacier persists into August most years. Trip reports from July 2025 indicate the glacier crossing was navigable but steep. Bugs reported as moderate in July.

Instead this is just a notification that a cell phone was found by me at the Trinity trailhead.

Getting There

Google MapsApple Maps
Parking

Phelps Creek Trailhead and Trinity Trailhead on Chiwawa River Road. Toilet at trailhead. Car shuttle or road walk needed between the two.

Approach

Chiwawa River Road from Highway 2 at Coles Corner. Check road status as fire closures affected access in 2025. Both Phelps Creek and Trinity trailheads accessible from this road.

Timing

Allow 3-5 days. Most parties go counterclockwise (Spider Gap first) to tackle the glacier crossing early. Start early on glacier day for firm snow.

Not a trip report (already did that). Instead this is just a notification that a cell phone was found by me at the Trinity trailhead.

FYI fire activity closed all incoming traffic to Phelps Creek + Trinity Trailheads starting July 19. Those that got in before then had big delays trying to leave (3 hours for us) due to all the vehicles/fire check points.

This trip has quite a few reports so I will focus on places I liked that are not often mentioned. First: The Chiwawa River Road is closed as of Saturday 7/19, and possibly before, due to fire operations for the POMAS fire.
