About This Trail

Shetipo Trail climbs 2,900 feet in 4.7 miles from Cottonwood Campground at the end of the Entiat River Road, punching directly up to the high ridges without the long valley approach that characterizes most Entiat trails. The lower section traverses the 2014 Wolverine Fire burn zone, where charred snags and open slopes replace the shade you might want on a hot day. After two miles, intact forest takes over and provides relief through a series of small creek crossings.

The final 1.5 miles steepen considerably with less consistent water access before the trail eases at the ridge junction. From here, the Garland Peak Trail heads right toward the high Entiat peaks and connects to the Entiat River Trail, while the Upper Mad River Trail goes left toward Blue Creek and Klone Peak. This junction makes Shetipo a key connector for multi-day loops through some of the quietest backcountry in the Central Cascades.

Solitude is the defining characteristic. Trip reports consistently note seeing no other hikers. The 38-mile drive up Entiat River Road filters out casual visitors, and the trail itself sees minimal maintenance. Expect brushy sections, blowdowns, and the kind of rough tread that rewards self-reliance. Bugs can be fierce through July.
