Rock Mountain via Snowy Creek
Central CascadesBest Jul–Oct
The quieter, more scenic back-door route to Rock Mountain's panoramic lookout site above Stevens Pass.
About This Trail
The Snowy Creek route up Rock Mountain takes the back door to one of the best lookout sites in the Stevens Pass corridor. At 9 miles roundtrip with 3,600 feet of gain, it is less steep, more scenic, and two miles shorter than the standard Rock Lake approach. The trail begins in old-growth forest along Snowy Creek, passes through a brushy avalanche zone, then climbs a forested ridge before breaking into alpine meadows with views toward Glacier Peak, the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, and the Highway 2 corridor.
The alpine traverse near the top is the highlight: wildflowers carpet the meadows from late June through August, and the panoramic summit rewards the effort with a full sweep of Central Cascade peaks. Trip reports consistently describe this as a surprisingly satisfying hike that draws people back year after year. The trail sees very light traffic and the route is easy to follow despite its lightly-maintained status. Lower sections can be brushy where avalanche paths cross, and bugs are fierce in early summer. Water is available in the first couple miles but runs dry above the meadows.
