About This Trail

Rock Mountain via Rock Lake is 8 miles of direct, punishing gain: 4,050 feet from Highway 2 to a 6,852-foot summit with a historic lookout foundation. The trail begins along a rough service road near power lines at 2,700 feet, then narrows into a steep, relentless climb paralleling Schilling Creek. The first 2.1 miles gain 2,250 feet through exposed terrain with valley views east toward Leavenworth.

Around 5,000 feet the character shifts. Meadows and granite outcrops replace the lower forest, and the trail contours through alpine terrain. At mile 3.2 and 6,000 feet, the Nason Ridge Trail junction provides an option to traverse the ridge. The final 1.2 miles follow alpine meadows, with potential snowfield crossings, to the old lookout site. Views from the top take in the Stevens Pass corridor, Nason Creek drainage, and surrounding Cascade peaks.

The trailhead sits right off Highway 2 near milepost 73, one of the few hikes in this corridor that does not require a high-clearance vehicle. The parking area is small and unmarked, just a dirt pulloff after the WSDOT buildings. The trailhead sign is the only marker. No pass is required. This trail rewards strong hikers who want maximum elevation per mile, and punishes anyone expecting a gentle approach.

The road to the trailhead, while very very short, was a little rough. Some cars could potentially struggle to get to the trailhead parking.

Thought we would try our hand at a trip up Rock Mountain even though there are no trip reports from this season. We quickly found out this was for good reason.
