About This Trail

Quartz Creek is the kind of trail you recommend to someone who wants to spend a day in big trees without punishing their knees. The 8.4-mile round trip gains a gentle 1,500 feet as it parallels Quartz Creek through old-growth forest, passing small waterfalls and crossing one stream that can be tricky on slippery rocks. The destination is Curry Gap, a meadow junction where the Quartz Creek, North Fork Skykomish, and West Cady Ridge trails converge.

The forest is the main event. Massive old-growth trees, the constant sound of water, and wildflowers in the understory make this a rich walk even without a dramatic summit payoff. Berries are abundant in late summer, with blueberries, huckleberries, and thimbleberries all reported along the route. Dogs do well here. The grade is gentle enough for older dogs or younger kids who can handle the distance.

A Northwest Forest Pass is required at the trailhead. Access is via Beckler River Road (FR 65), and as of late 2025, flood damage has closed the road. The Index-Galena approach may still work but check conditions. When the road is open, expect potholes and sharp rocks on the unpaved sections. Any vehicle can make it with patience. Some blowdowns on the trail are typical but nothing that stops progress. This trail also works well as the first leg of a longer backpacking loop.

Parking

Shared parking area with toilet facilities. Northwest Forest Pass required.

Approach

From Highway 2 near Skykomish, take Beckler River Road (FR 65) north 12.5 miles through Jack Pass. At the fork, take the second left, descend 2.3 miles, then turn right on FR 63 for 4.2 miles to the shared parking area. Alternatively, approach from Index via Index-Galena Road. As of late 2025, Beckler Road is closed due to flood damage. Verify road status before driving.

Timing

No rush. The trail is mostly shaded and the grade is gentle, so it works fine as a midday start.
