About This Trail

Purple Pass begins steps from where the ferry docks at Stehekin Landing and climbs 5,700 feet over 7.5 miles to a granite pass at 6,884 feet. The trailhead sits behind the Golden West Visitor Center, initially following the Purple Creek-Imus nature trail before branching upward. The lower miles pass through fire-scarred terrain with blowdowns and loose footing before reaching subalpine meadows filled with wildflowers.

The middle stretch earns its reputation as hot, dusty, and brushy. Water sources are scarce after Purple Creek, so carrying ample supply from the start matters. Upper elevations reward the effort with subalpine fir groves, wildflower displays, and panoramic views of Lake Chelan stretching south, with Glacier Peak and surrounding ranges visible on clear days. Juanita Lake sits in a basin beyond the pass and serves as a popular overnight camp for backpackers.

This trail connects to the War Creek and Boulder Creek drainages on the east side, creating point-to-point options over to the Twisp River valley. Larch season in mid-October draws hikers to Juanita Lake for golden color. A backcountry camping permit (free, register in person at the ranger station) is required for overnight trips.

  • War Creek access road closed due to multiple washouts

Getting There

Google MapsApple Maps
Parking

No parking pass required at the Stehekin side. Stehekin is boat-access only. War Creek trailhead on the east side requires driving to the Twisp River valley.

Approach

The trailhead sits behind the Golden West Visitor Center at Stehekin Landing, a 5-minute walk from the ferry dock. Take the Lady of the Lake from Chelan. For point-to-point trips exiting via War Creek, note the access road has multiple washouts adding significant road walking. Register for a free backcountry permit at the ranger station for overnight trips.

Timing

Start at first light to tackle the heat and elevation. The exposed middle section bakes in afternoon sun. Carrying 3-4 liters of water minimum is advisable since reliable sources are limited.

I hiked up to Purple Pass, visited Boulder Butte the following morning and camped down at Purple Point afterwards so I could visit the Bakery the next day. Purple Pass is a grind uphill—even with it being cooler this past weekend.

Got dropped off alone at 7 AM Monday morning at the locked gate for the War Creek trailhead road. My family was too lazy to hike to Stehekin, so they took the ferry.
