About This Trail

Phelps Creek is the main artery into the southern Glacier Peak Wilderness, providing access to Spider Meadow, Leroy Basin, Ice Lakes, and the approaches for Mount Maude and Seven Fingered Jack. The trail starts flat, following Phelps Creek through dense forest before entering the wilderness at 2.6 miles. A quarter mile in, the Carne Mountain Trail branches north for those seeking a steep larch-filled side trip.

The character of the trail changes past the wilderness boundary as it gains elevation more steadily, crossing multiple creek drainages that can run high in early summer. Leroy Creek is the most significant crossing. Beyond it, the Leroy High Route branches northeast into larch terrain that requires route-finding skills. The main trail continues three more miles to Spider Meadow, a broad wildflower basin surrounded by craggy peaks, old landslides, and active glacial geology.

The Chiwawa River Road to the trailhead has historically been rough but was regraded in 2024. The 2024 Pomas Fire closed access for most of the 2025 season, so check current conditions before heading out. This is a popular basecamp area, and the parking lot fills early on fall weekends during larch season. The combination of long approach, creek crossings, and high-elevation terrain makes this a trip that rewards strong hikers with days of exploration once they arrive.
