Mt. Hood Meadows via White River Canyon
Mt. Hood AreaBest Jul–Sep
A 9-mile Timberline Trail traverse linking Timberline Lodge to Mt. Hood Meadows across the White River \u2014 one of Hood's toughest glacial stream crossings included.
About This Trail
From Timberline Lodge, the Timberline Trail heads east across the White River Canyon and drops into the Mt. Hood Meadows drainage. Most hikers link this route only for the full Timberline Trail loop; as a point-to-point or out-and-back, it passes through some of the mountain's best scenery without the crowds that hit the Paradise Park or Cairn Basin segments. Early views across the southern Cascades open up within the first hundred yards, and looking back the iconic profile of Timberline Lodge — the Overlook Hotel exterior from The Shining — sits against the upper cone.
The route heads northeast from the lodge, climbs onto pumice slopes with Newberry's fleeceflower coloring red in late summer, crosses into the Richard L. Kohnstamm Wilderness, and reaches a viewpoint into the White River Canyon. Mountain hemlocks buried by debris flows during Mt. Hood's Old Maid eruptive period about 250 years ago now stand exposed in the canyon floor. A waterfall runs below; Trillium Lake and the forested Salmon River drainage fill the view south. The trail drops Boy Scout Ridge past huckleberry and mountain ash, reaches the Pacific Crest Trail junction, and switchbacks down through silver and noble fir to the White River crossing.
The White River has earned its reputation as one of Mount Hood's worst glacial stream crossings. It braids across the valley floor, typically requiring two or three separate fordings. A sign warns of the danger; early-morning lows are the only reliable window. Many hikers turn around at the White River Canyon viewpoint (2.3 miles in) to avoid the crossing and the steep climb beyond. Those continuing face a sustained slog up to Mt. Hood Meadows, where the eastern panorama opens. Suitable as a point-to-point with a car shuttle; the round-trip version is a full day with a creek crossing at each end.

First mile busy with Timberline Lodge tourists. Past the White River viewpoint, crowds thin quickly; past the White River crossing, the route feels almost empty.
Safety & Considerations
Today's Hazard
- Strong sun — sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses recommended; water reflection adds glare near the lake
Persistent Hazards
- White River crossing is one of Mt. Hood's worst glacial streams — morning only, avoid warm afternoons
- Braided channel with 2-3 separate crossings, each deeper than it looks
- Exposed pumice slopes with no shelter from afternoon storms
- Older trail sections closed by slide damage; watch for rerouted segments
