About This Trail

Herman Creek Trail #406 is one of the Oregon Gorge's few long low-elevation routes — usable almost year-round, quiet outside summer weekends, and worth the day even in driving rain. Broad views are few; seasonal waterfalls at stream crossings, old-growth Douglas-fir and western red-cedar in the upper reaches, and spring-summer wildflowers carry the outing. The 1913 Forest Service plans for this trail, built around 1915 at less than 12% grade as a primary transport trail of the era, still live in the Mt. Hood National Forest archives.

From the Herman Creek Trailhead near Cascade Locks, the trail drops, switchbacks up, crosses a powerline corridor, and enters the 2017 Eagle Creek Fire burn that extends roughly 5.5 miles to just before Whisky Creek. The understory burned away in most places; conifer canopy stayed mostly intact. After passing Herman Camp at a five-way junction, the route enters the Mark O. Hatfield Wilderness and continues past Nick Eaton Trail junction. A 2024 Whisky Creek Fire burned the upper section between Whisky Creek and the East Fork crossing — expect more challenging conditions there.

Natural turnaround options scale to your plan: Nick Eaton Falls at 4.2 miles round trip, Casey Creek Camp at 7.2, Slide Creek Falls at 10.0, Whisky Creek at 11.6, and Cedar Swamp Camp at 15.0. The full trail to the East Fork crossing is 15.4 miles round trip and serious day out. Herman Creek itself stays mostly out of sight below the trail tread — this is a hike for forest immersion, not creek watching. Poison oak is present along lower, sunnier sections.

Summer weekends draw backpackers and day hikers aiming for Nick Eaton Falls or Indian Point. Weekdays, winter, and the upper trail past Whisky Creek all stay empty.

Safety & Considerations

Persistent Hazards

 • Upper trail between Whisky Creek and East Fork was affected by the 2024 Whisky Creek Fire — expect downed trees and rough tread
 • Poison oak along lower, sun-exposed sections
 • Long round-trip distance; plan food, water, and turnaround time
 • Stream crossings can run high after heavy rain or spring runoff
