About This Trail

North Star Mountain sits at the far end of a long approach through some of the most spectacular alpine terrain in the Central Cascades. Most parties reach the summit via Phelps Creek Trail, passing through Spider Meadow and climbing to the upper basin before scrambling the final pitches to 8,096 feet. The route covers over 30 miles round trip and 4,500 feet of elevation gain from the Phelps Creek Trailhead, making it a serious multi-day objective.

The approach itself is half the reward. Spider Meadow spreads wide beneath the surrounding peaks, and the upper basin opens into a landscape of rock, ice, and pumice that feels properly remote. The scramble to the summit requires a helmet and solid route-finding skills. Views from the top stretch across the Entiat Mountains, Glacier Peak, and deep into the North Cascades.

This is not a casual weekend trip. The Phelps Creek road can be rough, the mileage is substantial, and the scramble demands respect. Plan for at least two nights out, carry a map, and come prepared for changing alpine conditions. An alternate approach exists via the Lake Chelan boat to Holden Village, though that route has been closed since late 2025 due to mudslides on FR 8301.

Parking

Phelps Creek Trailhead has a small lot. No parking pass currently required. The Chiwawa River road is long and has rocky sections; high clearance recommended.

Approach

Primary access is via Phelps Creek Trailhead off the Chiwawa River Road. Follow Phelps Creek Trail through Spider Meadow, then climb toward Cloudy Pass and scramble to the summit. The Chiwawa River road has rough sections that benefit from high clearance. The alternative Holden Village approach (via Lake Chelan boat) is currently closed due to mudslides on FR 8301, with closure expected through at least May 2026.

Timing

Start early on day one to maximize mileage into camp. Most parties camp near Spider Meadow or in the upper basin, then summit on day two. Budget at least two full days, three preferred.
