About This Trail

The North Fork Skykomish River trail follows one of the larger drainages on the west side of the Cascade crest through old-growth forest that ranks among the finest in the region. Enormous Douglas firs and western hemlocks line the corridor, and the river itself provides steady company for most of the route. The first 1.3 miles follow an abandoned road before the proper trail enters the forest, where the grade stays gentle at only about 700 feet of gain over the first four miles.

At mile 2.8, the Pass Creek trail branches off toward Cady Pass. Beyond that junction, the trail continues deeper into the drainage, crossing several clear streams on wooden bridges. The country gets wilder and more remote with each mile. Ambitious backpackers can use this corridor to connect with the PCT system, linking to West Cady Ridge, Dishpan Gap, or Benchmark Mountain for multi-day loops.

The North Fork Skykomish crossing at approximately mile 7 is the crux of the route. In late summer, it is a straightforward wade. During snowmelt or after heavy rain, it can be dangerous and should not be attempted. A 2014 avalanche damaged the trail around mile 7, and the reroute adds some rough terrain. This trail rewards patience and a willingness to travel slow through big, quiet forest.

  • Beckler River Road flood damage may block trailhead access
  • Remote location with long approach

Parking

Quartz Creek trailhead at the end of FR 63. Northwest Forest Pass required. No privy. Road has potholes and rough sections but is passable in most vehicles with care. Important: Beckler River Road (FR 65) closed due to late 2025 flood damage. Verify road status before your trip.

Approach

From Highway 2, approach via Beckler River Road (FR 65) or Index-Galena Road. Continue to FR 63 and drive to road's end. The trail starts on an old road for 1.3 miles; bear left at the junction around mile 1 to enter the forest proper. At mile 2.8, stay right at the Pass Creek junction to continue along the North Fork.

Timing

No need for a dawn start on this one. The gentle grade and forest cover make it a relaxed pace hike any time of day. If planning the full out-and-back to the river crossing, budget 6 to 8 hours.
