Mount Lillian
Central CascadesBest Jun–Oct
A quiet larch-season alternative to Lake Ingalls with big Cascade views from 6,100 feet.
About This Trail
Mount Lillian rises to 6,100 feet in the Wenatchee Mountains above Blewett Pass, offering a moderate summit hike through a patchwork of surviving old growth and the ghostly remnants of the 2012 Table Mountain Fire. The trail begins inside Ken Wilcox Horse Camp and climbs through alternating stretches of living forest and burn zones where silvered snags frame long views of the Teanaway, the Enchantments, and Glacier Peak.
The standard route follows Trail 1601, but the upper section has degraded significantly since the fire. A better option detours onto jeep track 4W312 at the 0.6-mile mark, avoiding the worst of the loose, dusty tread. This wider track reaches a rocky viewpoint before connecting to the Tronsen Ridge Trail. From the junction, the summit requires another 1.5 miles of climbing on steep, slippery terrain where trekking poles earn their keep.
Fall brings the real draw here: larches. The Blewett Pass larch zone catches golden color in mid-October, and Mount Lillian delivers without the crowds that pack Lake Ingalls. Trip reports consistently describe solitude on the trail. The forest road approach (FR 9716 to FR 9712) is rough and rutted, adding an adventure layer before the hike even starts.

Safety & Considerations
Today's Hazard
- Strong sun — sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses recommended
Persistent Hazards
- Degraded trail tread in burn zone, loose and slippery
- Route confusion at jeep track junction
Getting There
High-clearance vehicle recommended
Park at Ken Wilcox Horse Camp. Road FR 9712 is rutted and steep; high clearance helps but sedans have made it.
From Blewett Pass on Highway 97, take FR 9716, then left on FR 9712 for 1.6 miles, then continue on 9716 past Road 35 for 3 miles to Ken Wilcox Horse Camp. The road degrades after the initial turnoff.
Recent Reports
We started this hike on a cool, partly cloudy day. But the cold wind early in the morning warmed up nicely into the afternoon.
I ventured to the Wenatchee Mountains for a big ol' loop utilizing a bunch of trails. I started at the North Tronsen Ridge Trailhead atop 5 mile road.
I followed the 6 mile loop described on Day Hiking the Central Cascades. It was a gorgeous crisp fall day with temps in the 40's.
