Mohawk Falls and Mohawk Mine
Central CascadesBest May–Oct
An unmarked scramble to a mossy waterfall and abandoned mine tunnel near Skykomish.
About This Trail
Mohawk Falls drops through a mossy gorge near the old mining town of Skykomish, and a short scramble beyond the falls reaches the entrance to an abandoned mine tunnel. The waterfall runs higher than expected, and the mine shaft extends deep enough to feel like a real exploration. Both destinations sit on Forest Service land, though the trail to reach them is unofficial and unmarked.
Finding the trailhead takes some detective work. The parking area is small and unsigned, and the path winds through dense ferns and over downed logs. Kids who like clambering and exploring will find it more engaging than a standard forest walk. The route is short but rough, with no maintained tread.
WTA notes that the falls are on public land but adjacent to a private mine, and the lack of an official trail means this location is not formally recommended. The Bolt Creek Fire in 2022 affected the area, so check current access before visiting.
