Maloney Creek Interpretive Trail
Central CascadesBest Year-round
A short interpretive loop through old-growth forest near Skykomish with birding and creek views.
About This Trail
The Maloney Creek Interpretive Trail makes a half-mile loop through the 300-acre Maloney Forest preserve near Skykomish. The forest contains old-growth trees ranging from 50 to over 200 years old, with a mix of species creating a varied canopy. The flat, easy path stays low in the creek drainage and works well for young hikers or anyone wanting a quick leg stretch off Highway 2.
An older trail once climbed to higher elevations above the interpretive loop, but it is no longer maintained and has numerous blowdowns and overgrowth. Stick to the marked lower loop unless you are comfortable with off-trail navigation and scrambling over downed timber.
The trailhead sits at the end of Thelma Street in Skykomish with parking for about 4 vehicles. Space is tight, and the trail asks visitors to avoid blocking neighbors' driveways. No pass or fee required. The forest provides good wildlife habitat and birding opportunities, especially in the early morning before Highway 2 traffic picks up.
