Magnet Creek
Central CascadesBest Jun–Sep
An unmarked wildflower ridge hike off Highway 97 that rewards those who can find the trailhead.
About This Trail
Magnet Creek is the kind of trail that does not want to be found. There is no sign, no parking lot, and no maintained trailhead marker. The access point sits along Highway 97 just past milepost 171, once identified by a white PVC pipe that has since disappeared. A piece of lumber on the ground is the only remaining hint. Bring GPS coordinates and patience.
Once you locate the start, the trail climbs through second-growth forest before breaking onto an open ridge of ponderosa pine, hemlock, and rocky outcroppings. In late spring and early summer, the ridge transforms into a wildflower showcase. Trip reports describe the upper sections as a scenic wonderland with sweeping views. The route connects to Tronsen Ridge, making longer loop options possible for those with solid map skills.
This trail is currently closed due to damage from the Labor Mountain Fire. When open, it sees very light traffic and offers genuine solitude. The unmaintained character means blowdowns and faint tread are the norm. Some motorcycle use on the upper ridge sections.

Getting There
No parking pass or fee required. Pull off Highway 97 near the trailhead. No designated parking area.
Unmarked trailhead on Highway 97, a quarter mile past milepost 171. No sign or formal parking. GPS coordinates are essential for locating the start. The trail climbs steeply through forest before reaching the open ridge. Can be combined with Tronsen Ridge for a loop.
Morning start recommended to catch the best light on the ridge wildflowers and to allow time for the loop option via Tronsen Ridge.
Recent Reports
As Footluce mentioned, there is no white PVC pipe marking the trailhead. The piece of lumber is still there - photo attached.
I accessed the Magnet Creek Trail #1206 from the 4300' level on Rd 7204 (Ruby Ck) north of Blewett Pass. The trail follows the crest of the ridge and looks to get some motorcycle use as well as light hiker traffic.
The trailhead is difficult to find and the mentioned White PVC pipe marking the trailhead is no longer there. A “6x6”x 6’piece of lumber is laying on the ground at the trail head.
