Mad Lake
Central CascadesBest Jul–Sep
A 12-mile backcountry walk through meadows to a quiet lake with legendary mosquitoes.
About This Trail
Mad Lake sits at the end of a 12-mile one-way trail through the upper Mad River drainage, surrounded by meadows that fill with wildflowers in midsummer. The route follows the river valley upstream, gaining 1,800 feet gradually over its length. Side trails connect to Lost Lake and Whistling Pig Meadow, offering options for multi-day loops.
The primary approach starts at Maverick Saddle, reached via Forest Road 6101 from the Chiwawa River area near Plain. The road is narrow and rough, difficult for trucks with trailers. The trail itself is shared with mountain bikes and dirt bikes, so expect motorized traffic. Once at the lake, good campsites spread around the shore with meadow views.
Mosquitoes here are legendary. Every trip report from June through August describes aggressive, relentless bugs that bite through clothing and behind sunglasses. Bring a head net, long sleeves, and strong repellent. The distance and bugs keep visitor numbers low, making this a genuinely quiet backcountry destination for those willing to endure the insects.
