About This Trail

The Smithbrook trailhead gives you two choices at Union Gap: left to popular Lake Valhalla, right to Lake Janus. Most people go left. That works in your favor. The PCT drops through talus and huckleberry thickets to Janus, a shallow 40-foot-deep lake ringed by eight campsites and two pit toilets. Cutthroat trout dimple the surface. It is a solid backpacking destination on its own, but the real draw lies farther north.

Beyond the lake, the trail climbs through huckleberry meadows onto a ridge crest at 1,570 meters with views of Baring, Index, and the Evergreen Mountain lookout. Glasses and Margaret lakes sit below, though the scramble paths down are steep and overgrown. The final push to Grizzly Peak gains 120 meters through wildflower meadows to a broad, rounded summit rather than a sharp point. On a clear day you can pick out Rainier, Glacier Peak, Sloan's spire, the Monte Cristo group, and the Poet Peaks along Wenatchee Ridge.

Water is reliable until the ridge. A creek flows 1.2 km before the lake, and a small stream feeds a campsite at 1,510 meters. North of that campsite, plan on carrying what you need to the summit and back. Bears and gray jays frequent the lake area, so hang your food properly if you camp.

Getting There

Google MapsApple Maps
Parking

Smithbrook trailhead fits about 15 cars. Shared with Lake Valhalla hikers, so weekend mornings fill up. No services at the lot. FR 6700 (Smithbrook Road) is 2.8 miles of forest road off Highway 2, about 5 miles past Stevens Pass.

Approach

From the trailhead, switchback up to Union Gap at 1,417 meters. Turn right for Janus (left goes to Valhalla). The PCT drops and rolls to the lake in 5.5 km. For Grizzly Peak, continue north on the PCT for another 7.9 km, gaining the ridge and traversing to the summit at 1,692 meters.

Timing

For the full out-and-back to Grizzly Peak (26.7 km), start early. An 8 AM departure gives comfortable daylight for the round trip. If you just want the lake, a late morning start works fine.

Squeezed one last fall hike into the mountains with a trip to Lake Janus from the Smithbrook trail head.   The lot and the first part of the trail up to Union Gap also services Lake Valhalla.

We arrived at the Smithbrook TH around 8:30 and there were only 3 other cars in the lot.   We had the trail to Janus Lake to ourselves once we got to the PCT trail junction.

Everyone else went to Valhalla, we went to Janus, the alternative lake north on the PCT. It reminded us of hiking to lakes (22 and Heather) weekdays in the fall 20 yrs ago.
